John Coulter, Australian painter and designer. His work is influenced by graphic design, his profession for the past 50 years. He is inspired by the paintings of Mondrian and the architects and designers of the Bauhaus in the 1920s and 30s.
âI want to make a visual statement about the urban world. Our industrial world represented by the purest elements â design and colour in two-dimensional space without a hint of visual trickery such as perspective or modelling.â
Internally driven, and emotionally charged, Coulterâs original abstract art has been described as startling and its stunning impact when illuminated has to be seen to be understood.
These works with their explosive combination of elemental design and dazzling colour have an impact redolent of Op Art from the 1960s.
Coulter's expansive surfaces command the attention of passers-by, reward the focus of new as well as seasoned collectors and transform a static wall into a shimmering, Siren-like magnet for the eye. Few contemporary works rival their pure power and impact. |
