I love to paint – I HAVE to paint. Images pop into my head at times and will not leave until I’ve painted them out! It’s a weird thing to see a fully detailed and coloured painting even when your eyes are open but this is only part of my painting inspiration. I am an observer. My passion is to be able to capture a moment in life – whether it be a person, a clear wave on a sunny day or a combination of colours in a second’s glance.
I use mainly acrylic paints, sometimes oils – when my patience allows it. For me, I need to get my vision onto canvas as soon as I can and the fast drying time of acrylics suits this – so even my base two layers of an oil painting are done in acrylics. First layers for me are always a passionate frenzy of colour and shape, followed then by several layers of refining and slow, loving detail.
I’m self taught with these mediums as my history is with using gouache and watercolour. My background has given me a solid knowledge of colour, contrast and perspective and I use this – quite subconsciously at times, in my paintings. I have a fascination with light, shade and shadow in this wonderful country and I always try to express that. I paint to share myself with the world and I paint how I feel and what captivates me.
On the matter of subject, I’ve focussed mainly on what surrounds me – and as a keen surfer, that is the ocean and beaches. I know this is always going to be part of my subject matter as I have an incredibly strong yearning to connect with the sea. It heals me – it dissipates my stress and it's a part of who I am.
Recently though, as a result of sales success in Sydney and here in Queensland, I have more time to devote to my artwork, I have a peculiar sense of standing on the edge of an abyss and I want to step into it. I can feel there are endless paintings in there that will amaze and fulfil me even more than what I paint now. I have struggled with what is stopping me for some time but the more I paint, the stronger my desire becomes so I am curious and excited to see what my future in painting will be.
Thank you for this opportunity to express my Art to you. |
